Feminist perspective

Filed Under In case you missed it, Politics | Leave a Comment

I just read a great blog entry on Feministe that addresses both lubricants and the “sure grip” product I wrote about in my last post.

I’m linking to it today as it points out that personal lubricant is high on the list of things women are not eager to buy in person and then gets into a great discussion about why this is. The debate, generally speaking, is about whether this shame is rooted in sexism or a culture that’s up tight about sex. I would tend to think the latter, in this instance anyway. However, the silver lining is that if you’re buying your personal lubricant on line because your ashamed to do it in person, at least your saving some money.

Is Personal Lubricant Legitimate Fodder for Conservative Condemnations of Homosexuality?

No, of course not. Lubrication becomes embroiled in the debate over homosexuality when conservatives claim that because men’s body parts are not compatible and their anuses do not produce lubrication, homosexuality must necessarily be unnatural and wrong. This view is espoused by such luminaries as George Bush’s choice for the Surgeon General of the United States. However, it is patently preposterous. First, on the non-lubricant point that men’s body parts are not compatible: this line argument is demonstrably asinine. The untold trillions of successful acts of anal sex should be more than sufficient to disprove non-compatibility. This argument can be merely dismissed as silly.

The implications of the lubricant argument are far more disturbing. If your body doesn’t produce enough lubricant, your sex acts are unnatural!?! The assumption behind this argument must necessarily be that if an outside lubrication source enhances the comfort and enjoyability of a sexual act, then the act is unnatural and immoral. This is madness! By this logic it would be immoral for a woman experiencing vaginal dryness to have sex with her husband! Clearly, personal lubricant makes the world a better, more enjoyable place, something which wrong-headed arguments decidedly do not.
